Opinions Are Like Assholes

Today, I watched a series of Youtube videos that led me to “10 greatest Nicholas Cage Moments,” which I can only assume is the deepest and darkest part of the internet.

The great thing about the internet is that anyone can start a blog or write an opinion piece and it’s out there for the world to discover. The worst thing about the internet is that anyone can start a blog or write an opinion piece and it’s out there for the world to discover.

That means every Johnny Two-Cents can boot up his computer, register a domain or space on a free site, and jot down his thoughts. Let me show you what I mean…

Let’s take this article, titled Why Nice Guys and Gals Finish Last in Love. The title is pretty self explanatory; In order to turn around the “Nice guys finish last” feeling, you need to make people put time in to getting to know you, not reward bad behavior, and don’t be too available in order to find someone who appreciates you for who you are.

HsH Opinion: I’ll admit, I was a Nice Guy who often finished last. The thing is, I didn’t stop being nice to people or continually investing in people. I always think you should start everyone on a level playing field before you meet them, and then decide where they are at after you spend a little time with them. That philosophy immediately puts me in a state where I have to invest a little to see my return. If the return is minimal, then I know it’s not worth investing. That doesn’t mean I don’t put in time to get to know people, or become unavailable because I should be seen as something unattainable.

The goal isn’t to make someone see you for how you want to be seen; the goal is to make people see you for who you are. I don’t want people to think I’m a good guy because I act like I’m good. I want people to think I’m a good guy because they see my good acts.

HsH Summary: Don’t invest in shitty people. There…that was easy.

Let’s move on to Miley Cyrus. She put on a show at the VMAs and people pooped their pants. So a bunch of articles came out talking about how Robin Thicke is not a good role model. Here’s a snippet of how guy’s shouldn’t model their lives after male pop stars and celebrities and their lives.

You see the bright lights and the sexy women, but you don’t see what happens when the cameras are off and these pop culture gods return to their lives as mere mortals. You don’t see them in their big, empty, lonely houses. You don’t see the emptiness in the pit of their souls. You don’t see all the alcohol and drugs they have to use to dull the pain of living a life devoid of real, committed relationships. You don’t see the hatred they have for themselves and for humanity. You don’t see the jealousy they have towards normal, decent men.

HsH Opinion: If your son wanted to be a pop celebrity, would you tell him that his success would lead him to a life of hot girls, empty houses and a deep depression? Or would you just teach your son to be a good person? Maybe you should teach him that opportunity looks a lot like hard work, or that he’ll never have a job that he’s better than

HsH Summary: Don’t be a shitty person. There…that was easy.

We can also talk about GMO Labeling. Or at least talk about how terrible the people are who challenge a 14-year-old girl and make her stand up against her beliefs.

HsH Opinion: This is more about the article than the video. I actually think that girl did a good job during the interview, and although Kevin O’Leary tried to get her on a really petty point, both of them held strong to their position. The problem is the article that says the “host named Kevin O’Leary verbally assaults the girl and practically accuses her of murdering children.” Or the other line that defends her by saying O’Leary “accusing her of being a ‘lobbyist’ against GMOs (an absurd accusation that O’Leary knows is false, as there is no corporate interest in honest food labeling), and then equating her position of questioning GMOs with somehow supporting a holocaust of widespread death of children.”

HsH Summary: Don’t throw around the word holocaust if it’s just a challenge to see where an opinionated person stands.

Finally, there’s music. Like, the most relaxing music ever according to research. Or there’s a way to teach your kids not to listen to crappy music. Recordhound shared my views until I realized he said it anonymously, just like I do.

HS Opinion: Do whatever you think is best. I’m just another idiot with a blog anonymously typing with an opinion…

By the way…something’s happening in Syria or something…

Thanks for reading.
